What is Recidivism?
A previous conviction resulting in an increased sentence for an offence committed afterwards.
Recidivism does not increase the sentence; but the regime of enforcement is stricter and the proportion required for conditional release is higher. After serving the sentence the convicted person is subject to probation. Once the periods laid down in the law have passed, the earlier conviction no longer counts for recidivism.
