What is Legal Aid?
A mechanism allowing people who cannot meet the costs of litigation to be temporarily exempted from court expenses and attorney fees.
An application for legal aid may be made to the court with the statement of claim or at any stage of the proceedings. The applicant must document their lack of means (a certificate of poverty from the local headman, income details, and searches of land registry and vehicle records) and the claim must not be manifestly unfounded. If granted, the fees and expenses are borne provisionally by the state; if the case succeeds, they are recovered from the other side.
